While UMC has been the state's only academic medical center with a long history of medical firsts, the public saw it as a charity hospital – only for the extremely sick and the extremely poor. For people with medical insurance, it was clearly the hospital of last resort. One focus group respondent summed it up by saying, "If I'm dying, take me to UMC. Otherwise, turn the ambulance around and take me anywhere else."
